Of course Disney released Christmas records, and have been doing so for a long time and I doubt they will be stopping any time soon. The earliest recordings on my list are mostly records released through Disneyland Records. They are certainly some of my favorite Disney related Christmas records. Quite a few are Non-Music, Spoken Word records. Mary Martin reciting The Little Lame Lamb – A Christmas Story of St. Francis, recorded in 1960. Also, The Sounds Of Christmas – A Story With Songs & Sound Effects from 1972. The record contains Christmas stories combined with short sound effects. “Plus over 100 sound effects for your own stories.”
In addition, there are two TV soundtracks under the Disneyland Records label. Andy Griffith narrates Frosty’s Winter Wonderland from Rankin – Bass, which aired on ABC in 1976. Also, Joel Gray narrates “’Twas The Night Before Christmas,” also from Rankin – Bass, which aired on CBS in 1974.
There are two entries of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The first is by The Walt Disney Players, released in 1974. The other is titled “Walt Disney Productions’ Presents Mickey’s Christmas Carol” from 1982. Honestly, I’m not sure if they’re the same recordings. I need to digitalize both and compare. I don’t think they are, but the possibilities are there. I hope they are different. I have both on LP and both come with a book you can read along with, so they might be the same.
Not all of the early Disneyland Records music releases feature the voices of Mickey, Donald, et al. Many contain Children’s Christmas music recorded by Children Choirs. “The Little Drummer Boy And Other Songs Of Christmas” from 1968, “Favorite Songs Of Christmas Including Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” from 1972, and “Walt Disney Presents 30 Favourite Songs Of Christmas With Chimes And Chorus” and “Walt Disney Presents A Christmas Adventure In Disneyland,” both from 1973. As far as my collection goes, and it’s pretty inclusive of what was available, it seems that after 1976, most of the Disney releases did feature the voices of Mickey, Donald, et al.
Since I have so many newer Walt Disney CDs, there could be a lot of repeat selections. Once again, I need to digitalize them and find out. Again, I hope they are all different recordings.
If it has any connection to Disney, either through Disneyland Records or Walt Disney Productions, it will show up in this list.
